The Challenges of Outdoor Displays

Direct sunlight, temperature extremes, UV degradation and moisture all conspire against outdoor displays. Getting it right means addressing each as part of a coordinated system - not in isolation.

Sunlight Readable Displays

Screen Blackout

In direct sun, LCDs can overheat until liquid crystals stop working turning the screen black. Thermal management and heat-tolerant LC mixtures prevent it.

Sunlight Readable Displays

Temperature

Wide swings between hot and cold affect backlight output and slow LC response time. Industrial-grade panels are rated from -30°C to +85°C.

Sunlight Readable Displays

UV Damage

Prolonged exposure to UV bleaches polarisers, fades colour and yellows the cover lens over time. UV-filtering cover glass is the standard defence.

Sunlight Readable Displays

Moisture Ingress

Condensation behind unbonded cover glass causes fogging, while dust and salt air accelerate delamination. Optical bonding seals the stack against both.

Choosing the Right Technology

We match the right technology to your application - brightness, power budget, update rate and enclosure all factor in.

Dynamic Displays - Content Rich and Interative

When you need image rich full colour graphics, moving images and high levels of user interaction.

Reflective, Bistable - Low Power Displays

If your content updates infrequently - think wayfinding or digital posters - these displays use ambient light rather than competing with it, consuming power only at the moment of update.

Sunlight Readable Displays

Cholesteric-LCD

Full colour
Zero standby power

✅ Retains image with zero power
✅ Up to 16.7 million colours
✅ Fast full screen refresh in <200ms
✅ Wide operating temperature
✅ Solar power capability

Sunlight Readable Displays

Electronic Paper Displays

Paper-like quality -
zero power consumption

✅ Black & white to full colour
✅ Spectra6 - 60k colours
✅ Kaleido - 4k colours
✅ Print quality visuals
✅ Proven outdoor tech

Sunlight Readable Displays

Memory in Pixel

Ultra Low-Power
Outdoor Visability

✅ Reflective for daylight visibility
✅ Zero power image retention
✅ Ideal for solar or battery devices
✅ Minimal heat generation
✅ Wide viewing angles

Reflective displays don't stop working at night. Both CH-LCD and EPD are available with integrated front lighting - a low-power LED layer activated only when needed. For solar-powered installations, the overall energy budget remains well within what a modest panel and battery can sustain.
