Energy-efficient, sunlight-readable display solutions.
Zero Power Displays are transforming how visual information is delivered across outdoor environments, public transport, smart homes, and retail.
Using advanced ePaper and Cholesteric-LCD (CH-LCD) technology, they provide an energy-efficient alternative to traditional digital signage - reducing power consumption while maintaining clear, consistent visibility, even in bright outdoor conditions.
Their bistable design means power is only used during updates, enabling months or years of operation from battery or solar sources - ideal for low-power or remote applications.
A reflective, bistable LCD technology that retains images without continuous power, Colour CH-LCD delivers vibrant full-colour visuals without the need for a backlight, making it exceptionally energy-efficient.
Perfect for ultra-low-power applications where colour visibility matters, including public information displays, retail promotions, and industrial labelling.
Zero Power Displays are available in several formats to suit indoor and outdoor environments. All offer excellent readability in bright conditions, hold an image without power, and deliver a paper-like appearance.
| Display Technology | Colours | Power Usage for Static Images | Refresh Rate | Max Operating Temperature |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CH-LCD | 16.7M | 0 Watts | 200ms | -30° to +80°C |
| EPD - Kaleido | 4k | 0 Watts | 1-2s | -15° to +65°C |
| EPD - Spectra 6 | 60k | 0 Watts | 15s | 0° to +50°C |
| EPD - Tri-Colour | 3 | 0 Watts | 22s | 0° to +50°C |
| EPD (Monochrome) | 2 | 0 Watts | 1-2s | 0° to +50°C |

We don’t just provide displays- we deliver complete, application-ready solutions. Our experts can pair your display technology with:
Together, we create fully tailored, application-ready systems designed to meet the unique demands of your product.
ePaper displays are significantly more environmentally friendly than traditional alternatives, producing up to 12,000 times less CO₂ emissions than LCD screens, and up to 60,000 times less than using paper.
By switching to low-power ePaper technology, retailers, advertisers, and public services can reduce their environmental footprint while still delivering dynamic, real-time updates with ease.
A smart step forward for organisations committed to sustainability, without compromising on performance.

Below are some questions we get asked regularly. If there is anything else you would like to know, please contact us here:
How do zero power displays use no energy?
They are zero power when the image is static, relying on bistable display technology, meaning the screen only draws power during an image update. Once the content is set, ePaper and CH-LCD modules hold the image without ongoing energy
What’s the difference between ePaper and Cholesteric LCD technologies?
ePaper provides a paper-like, high-contrast display ideal for signage and labels and is available in different configurations, ie Black/White, Tri-Colour, 6 Colour but has a slower refresh rate, while Cholesteric-LCD (CH-LCD) delivers full-colour, sunlight-readable visuals with faster refresh rates when content needs to be changed. Both offer zero power static images, but are suited to different clarity, colour, and environmental requirements.
Are these displays suitable for outdoor environments?
Yes, both ePaper and CH‑LCD are inherently sunlight‑readable. Cholesteric LCDs operate a cross a wider temperature range than ePaper. Both maintain content with zero power draw, making them ideal for transport signage, wayfinding, and other outdoor applications.
Can these displays run on battery or solar power?
Absolutely. Because zero power displays only use energy during refresh, they can operate for months or years on small batteries or lightweight solar systems, even in off‑grid or hard‑to‑reach locations.
Which industries benefit most from zero power displays?
Applications span retail, public transport, industrial labelling, smart buildings, and healthcare, where organisations need energy‑efficient, low‑maintenance, and high‑visibility signage without the running costs of traditional LCDs.
Can Anders help integrate these displays into a full system solution?
Yes, Anders can pair zero power display technology with custom interface boards, single‑board computers, wireless modules, and embedded control systems to deliver a complete, application‑ready, production‑scalable solution.
What operating temperatures are supported?
Cholesteric-LCD (CH-LCD) currently have a wider operating temperature of -30 to +80°C whereas the eink’s Kaleido3 is ePD module built for outdoor usage with an operating temperature of -15 to +65°C.
How quickly can the display refresh?
Zero power displays can refresh in as little as 0.2 seconds for full colour CH-LCD. ePD displays are slower to refresh at 1-2 seconds for the Kaleido colour and up to 22 for tri-colour. These refresh rates are being reduced all the time to improve responsiveness.
