Memory in Pixel Technology

Memory-in-Pixel (MiP) displays feature built-in memory in each pixel, retaining images without constant refresh. This minimises power use and processor load, making them ideal for wearables and portable devices.

Their reflective design ensures sharp, clear visuals even in bright outdoor settings. Available in both monochrome and colour.

How Memory-in-Pixel (MiP) Technology Works

  • Built-in Memory: Each pixel includes a small static RAM (SRAM) memory cell, allowing it to store its state (brightness or colour) without continuous input from the processor.
  • Static Image Retention: Once an image is displayed, it remains on the screen indefinitely as long as sufficient current is supplied. This eliminates the need for constant data refreshing at high frame rates (e.g., 30fps or 60fps), significantly reducing processor workload and power consumption.
  • Efficient Updates: When the display content needs to change, only the pixels that require an update consume power. For example, turning a page on an e-reader updates only the necessary pixels while leaving the rest untouched.
  • Reduced Processor and Bus Load: With no need for continuous data transfer, the processor and bus are free to focus on other tasks, further improving system efficiency.

This innovative design makes MiP displays an excellent choice for devices requiring long battery life and sharp, reliable visuals.
