An OLED display (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) uses organic compounds to emit light when an electric current is applied. Unlike traditional LCD displays, OLEDs do not require a backlight because each individual pixel generates its own light.
This fundamental difference enables OLED displays to deliver unparalleled contrast, vibrant colours, and incredibly deep blacks.
The lack of a backlight means they are very slim and lightweight and extremely energy efficient.
Comparing OLED Technology
Passive Matrix OLED
Features a straightforward control scheme, where each row in the display is controlled sequentially. This simplicity results in a slim design and extremely low power consumption, ideal for handheld battery-operated devices.
Active Matrix OLED
Incorporates an active matrix of OLED pixels integrated onto a TFT array providing precise control over each individual pixel. This enables higher resolution, faster refresh rates and larger panel sizes compared to Passive Matrix OLED displays.
