Extremely low-power monochrome displays

E-paper differs from LCD because it only consumes power to change an image on the display. This is possible because E-paper is a bistable display technology, meaning that pixels will remain in a ‘selected’ state (dark) when chosen or in a ‘non-selected’ state (light) when not chosen. Dark ‘ON’ pixels can be controlled to display 16 grey shades on selected models and in more advanced modules, 7 different pixel colours are supported.
Once updated, the new display image will remain on the screen without the need for additional power, unlike traditional displays which require refreshing constantly, several times per second. This feature of the e-paper display means that battery operated devices using an e-ink technology display module can run for weeks or even months on a single battery charge.
As mentioned above e-Paper displays can retain an image on the display with no power making these displays perfect for applications in the area of IoT, including electronic shelf labels, smart labels, smart home, smart wearables, smart logistics, smart healthcare, smart transportation, industrial instrumentation, and wireless communication.
