Types of Local Dimming Technologies

Not all local dimming implementations are the same. The choice of technology significantly impacts the display’s performance. There are three primary types:

Edge-Lit Local Dimming

LEDs positioned along the screen's edges direct light through a diffuser to create dimming zones. While cost-effective, they lack precision, often resulting in brightness bands and limited control over specific screen areas.

Full Array Local Dimming

FALD features a grid of mini-LEDs with individually controlled dimming zones, offering exceptional contrast, deeper blacks, and HDR performance by synchronizing brightness with screen content.

Direct-Lit Local Dimming

Using larger LEDs with fewer zones, direct-lit systems provide better performance than edge-lit designs but less precision than FALD, leading to potential light leakage and reduced contrast.
