Our Touchscreen and Firmware Tuning Services

Advances in touchscreen technology mean that you can have a world of information and services at the touch of your finger. Customers quite rightly want an industrial touchscreen as good as a tablet.

What is Capacitive Touch?

Capacitive touchscreens sense the conductive properties of an object, usually the skin on your fingertip. They are more responsive than a resistive screen when it comes to gestures such as swiping and pinching. Capacitive touchscreens can also be operated while wearing certain types of gloves.

  • Clear, bright appearance
  • Responsive to the lightest of touches
  • Supports gesture/multi-touch functionality
  • Can work with gloved hands

What is Resistive Touch?

A Resistive touchscreen requires a touch with a certain amount of force applied to its surface. It consists of a flexible film upper layer and a rigid lower layer. Resistive touchscreens can be operated with a finger, a fingernail, a stylus or any other pointing object. However this technology is rapidly disappearing and we address some of the challenges why in our article on RTP technology.

  • Low production cost
  • High resistance to dust and water
  • Best suited for handwriting recognition

Firmware tuning

The touchscreen’s firmware is a set of algorithms that can be adjusted to ensure the touchscreen delivers the best performance for its intended application.

As well as providing the means to set pre-configured attributes such as touch resolution, screen orientation, number of touch points and type of gesture recognition enabled, fine tuning the firmware can also ensure the touchscreen’s performance can be optimised  for the following requirements:

  • Specific cover lens materials and thicknesses
  • Gloved finger inputs of various material types
  • Water rejection
  • Improved immunity to EMI through software filtering.

Why is Touch & Firmware optimisation important

Touchscreen and firmware optimisation is a critical factor for industrial designs especially when:

  • User's expectations are very high, everyone wants the same experience as using smartphones and tablets.
  • Users are wearing industrial gloves of different material affecting responsiveness
  • The display is being used in outodoor environments with potential false touch threaths (i.e. from water drops)
