Rugged by Design: Engineering an Outdoor HMI from Concept to Repeat Production
Sunlight readability is where most outdoor display briefs start. It's rarely where they end.
When a customer approached Anders needing a 15.6" touch monitor for a ruggedised outdoor HMI, the brief looked straightforward on paper: sunlight-readable, impact-protected, EMC certified, and ready to bolt into an existing machine. In practice, it meant engineering an entire system - optics, mechanics, thermal management and compliance - around a display that had to survive daily use outdoors for years.
The Brief
The customer needed a unit that could:
- Deliver uncompromised sunlight readability
- Withstand knocks and contamination in daily use
- Integrate an operator-identification camera
- Fit the mechanical footprint of an existing machine
- Carry full EMC certification and CE marking
Why Off-the-Shelf Fell Short
A standard industrial touch monitor came close, but not close enough. Getting it installation-ready meant substantial modification, and those modifications kept creating new roadblocks in the design rather than resolving the original brief.Anders took a different starting point: a proven display platform, engineered from there into a complete, purpose-built monitor rather than adapted after the fact.
Multiple Disciplines needed to work together
Optical
A high-brightness IPS-TFT panel reaching 1,500 cd/m² for sunlight readability, with optical bonding that cuts reflection and adds structural strength to the panel.
Mechanical
A rugged enclosure and custom bezel with fixing points matched exactly to the existing installation, so the rest of the host system needed no redesign. A strengthened impact resistant cover lens.
Integration
HDMI video and USB touch keep the interfaces familiar to the host system, while an operator-identification camera is built directly into the finished unit rather than bolted on.
Thermal
Slim, filtered cooling fans and protective guards fit within the available space, keeping electronics cool without opening a route for dust or moisture.
